In 2004, the Municipality of Waterland decided to combine the new construction of schools with other functions. In this way, good, easily accessible facilities for children, parents and the neighbourhood as a whole can be offered in one place, with the school at its heart. The new school building houses the two old primary schools: Sint Sebastianusschool and Van Randwijkschool.
René Hilhorst, a pupil at Van Randwijkschool, came up with the name De Grote Grutto, which was selected from dozens of entries by a jury.
