During the development of the Leidsche Rijn in Utrecht, many archeological finds were made. The most talked-about is De Meern 1, a 26-metre-long and 2,000-year-old boat. This and other finds led to the decision to develop the archeological national monument De Hoge Woerd. The new Castellum was built at the location that once featured a Roman fortress 2,000 years ago. The location is exactly that of the original fortress, the ramparts are as high as they were then and the same applies to the circumference. The new visitor centre offers space to a museum, theatre, nature and environment education and a restaurant. It is a modern interpretation of the Roman fortress that once was. Sustainable materials were used to build the Castellum.
